Call AT&T and ask them to explain your wireless bill? AT&T is awful. It is difficult to pick just one main complaint about them in fact. There are so many reasons to hate them.

Verizon has ONE hiccup right now that is keeping me from jumping ship, and that is simply that they can't do voice/data at the same time. I am sure they will fix it, and it probably isn't THAT huge of a deal anyway, but it does bother me.

Make no mistake about it though, AT&T is a travesty.

It's getting close. I'll be blogging and posting pictures as often as we can. You can always keep up here, but if all goes well, the posts should hit Facebook, the pictures should hit Flickr, and any video should hit YouTube. I am going to try and come up with a decent way to blog and maybe photo-document the road trip itself this year too. I think we will be presenting to slide show in the tent this year again, so maybe I can post those as I create them. I will be much busier this year with a few projects I am involved with, but hopefully the new technology will let me keep info flowing somewhat regularly.

Some of you may know that Russell James is a photographer that I follow. He does some crazy cool work, and he has some of the coolest gigs you can imagine. Anyway, he started a little photo contest on his Facebook page. Each week he does a new topic. Watching the Grammys and joking about the awful state of mainstream music is fun, but pretty sad at the same time. It seems pretty simple to me. Until music fans raise their standards, then the Taylor Swift's of the world will continue to prove over and over again on the national stage that you don't have to sing on key to win awards or play on big stages. When are people going to realize that the least common denominator is what gets shoved down our throats? When are the masses going to admit that these people are just not any good? There are so many talented people out there doing what they do, and it is damn near criminal that people continue to accept the garbage that is thrown at them rather than make the effort to seek out these genuinely gifted artists.

You can blame the labels and the machine all day long, but until the audience makes up their mind to demand better, they will keep getting crap.

Ballet Shoot

Had a shoot today with a little ballerina. Pretty fun. She is only four, but we had a great time and I think some of the shots came out really great.

Also finally had some time to get the studio in order and clean up from the last month of shooting. I can see the floor in the equipment room for the first time in months!

Beautiful Steamboat Springs

It is such a beautiful day today...much warmer as well. Wait...why would I know it is beautiful in Steamboat? We left yesterday morning didn't we?

We tried. A couple of sub-zero evenings apparently froze a seal in my transmission and when I put it in 4WD, it shattered. So when I walked outside to make one last check of the trailer and the truck before leaving, I looked down and found a puddle beneath the truck. I ran into town as quick as I could and realized this was not something a quick-lube place could help me with. So, I ended up at the Chevy Dealership. Their service department wasn't open on Saturday and my steady drip was now a pour. I ended up going to the Ford Dealership and pulling in right before the service department closed. So, at least I had a place to park it until it could be fixed. Parts will be ordered Monday, and if I am lucky enough, someone in Steamboat Springs just might have what we need, and then I can get out of here Tuesday morning. More likely though, no one will have the part for my truck as it is not the most common thing on the road. So they try to pull a part out of Denver, which depending on weather can take a day or two to get here. Then it will take an entire day to pull the tranny, torque converter and replace the seal, if in fact it is the one we think it is. Quick calculation tells me that I MIGHT be able to leave Wed Night, more likely Thursday morning. 17 Hours later, and I will be back home...

I had to get Mom, Kim, and the kids plane tickets a day in advance so they can get home for school and such. I was able to extend my condo for one more night, but I am not exactly fired up about extending it anymore. So I might find a ride into town and stay someplace close to the dealership. Needless to say, a resort town is not the least expensive place to be stuck.

No idea what the total is going to be on this truck, but I was REALLY freaking close to coming home in a brand new Ford pickup yesterday. Maybe I can get some pictures worked up since I look like I have some time on my hands. May go do a little skiing for a day or two.

Overall, MusicFest was excellent this year. Didn't get around as much as I would have liked, but it was MUCH colder this year than in the past several years. Incredible event as always and I can't wait until next year. We did a few new things this year that I thought worked great. Have a few ideas for next year as well. Everyone have a great year, and Happy Steamboat to you!

Busy Day Today

Long night last night. Just about ready to call it a night and got involved in a little project that started the "One thing leads to another" chain of events. Like all late nights at Steamboat, it involved all sorts of Braun family members picking guitar, playing fiddle, and singing some hilarious songs. Right before that I ended up taking a few shots of an interview with Cody Canada and Todd Snider. One of the funniest and coolest moments of the trip thus far for me.

Today starts earlier than usual because we have the Lee Ann Womack Tribute starts at 2:00. Then the marathon of killer music begins!

Need to get to work getting my shots over to the tent. Have gumbo getting started...we shall see if I have a chance to finish that or not.

Getting ready for Day Two

Also getting ready to go tubing with friends and family out at Saddleback Ranch. Hopefully will be back by 4:30 so I can deliver my pics to the tent. Today should be a little less hectic than yesterday and hopefully I can cover more shows. Going up the mountain for the show last night (which was awesome by the way...Lee Brice, Granger Smith, Kyle Park, Brandon Jenkins, and then ending with Wade and Randy's "Hold My Beer and Watch This show") made it tough to cover the events because it was at full capacity and they stopped letting people up the gondola.

Looking forward to a few key afterparties and some killer music today! More family arriving today, and then some tomorrow!

Musicfest Day 2

Actually Day ONE as far as music goes, and day three for us. Day four if you count leaving the launch pad. So who knows what day it is. haha

Beautiful day today, but need some new snow for the skiing! Will start shooting today as the first shows crank up at 2:00. Going to play in the snow with the kids for a while first.

Saw some of the new killer prototypes from @JustinBentRail. Some pretty cool looks. The General Store is looking great, and the Dung Beetle should be pretty awesome as well. Time for a beer.

Well, the first hangover is officially underway! We are all checked in and unpacked. Need to get our lift tickets and get the kiddos registered for ski school. Today is a fun day because you start getting to catch up with all the folks who are rolling into town. The Grand will be hopping tonight I'd imagine.

Getting all my gear charged up and ready to rock. BEAUTIFUL day here. Has some light snow this morning, but the sun out and it is freaking gorgeous right now.

Ready to launch...sort of. Still waiting on the women to pack so I can load the trailer. By the way, the trailer rocks (thanks again to Lonestar Music and also to Fast Signs).

The problem is, with all that space, anything and everything goes into the trailer. Makes for some very indiscriminate packing. I just dumped my closet into it. Took 5 minutes. I don't see what is holding the rest of the crew up.

Anyway, going to take the scenic route up. May take a little longer, but I can't imagine my kids in a truck rolling for 8 hours through Oklahoma and Kansas.

Been testing apps all day for use during Musicfest. There are way more choices than last year. Based off what I have seen today, I am going with Posterous. Seems to be the easiest to use for my purposes.

I will probably mess with Gowalla while there as well because it looks like it could be useful for finding people in the different venues. Someone has to create the Musicfest Tent, Bear River, Grand Ballroom...etc but I am sure that will not take long.

Posterous looks like it can handle some picture posting fairly well too.

I will be posting photos via flickr for the most part. Using tags I can make those come up on my on my Blog specifically where I want them. I will tag them all with Musicfest 2010 if anyone wants to see the pics. Those will include everything, and not just the show/event pics.

The show and event pics will be rolling on the big screens in the tent between sets as well. So if you see me on the mountain or around town, say cheese and you might make the slide show!

Musicfest, Oil Changes, and Trial Runs

Getting my final packing done for Musicfest! Yesterday I changed the oil in my truck, put the new stickers on my trailer, bought some hand warmers for the kiddos, and gathered all my road trip info. So far so good. Now I am testing a few applications out to see which one will actually work the best for me as far as updating websites when I am at Musicfest this year. Last year I used my Blogger account and my Twitter account to post some updates, but I think I will get a little fancier this year and try to update multiple sites at once.

We shall see how that works out! Tank introduced me to Posterus, which looks promising!

Merry Christmas

Well, Christmas finally came and went and MusicFest is next on our calendar. Getting the new trailer ready to roll. This will be our first time driving and in some ways I look forward to it, and in some ways not so much.

Going to be a good one. We have lots of family going this time and the kiddos are SO fired up!

Lowe's

I have never made any secret about my love affair with Lowe's. Today, they made it official...Lowe's is my favorite store on the planet.

As some of you know, I am currently in the process of getting my new studio up and running. It has been a long process, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

This weekend while doing my regular "Lowe's weekend walkthru," I bought some cabinets to put together my kitchen at the studio. I happened to run across a fridge that was on sale for $200. Regular $598. Sweet... So I ask about it and come to find out, someone had bought it, and brought it back saying it did not work. It had been repaired. The only flaw was that the prson who bought it had scratched the door up in one spot. It is a black fridge, and goes perfect with my interior, so I decided the scratch was not that big of a deal and bought it.

Lowe's delivered it yesterday, and much to my dismay, when I plugged it in I got nothing. No power. Sad times...sad times. So I called Lowe's and asked them to come get it. They said that they had sent it to the repair facility and that it came back to them with a note that nothing was wrong.

Clearly, that was not true. So they said they'd come get it, and that they would credit me the amount back. However, since it was a closeout "off the shelf" item, there wasn't much they could do other than give me my money back. Ok...fine.

Then I get a call this morning that they are coming to pick it up, and that they decided to make it right. So they brought me a brand new version of the same fridge to replace mine. No charge.

Yeah for me! And Yeah for all my tasty cold Bud Lights who now have a home!

Tooth Fairy

The tooth fairy made a stop at our casa last night for Jakin. He has had a tooth about to fall out of his face hole for three days.

However, if you loose a tooth at school, you get this rockin' tooth necklace to wear around with your tooth in it.

So he did everything possible to hold off until school yesterday. Mission accomplished!

Studio Getting Close

First off, let me say that I have wanted a Kindle for a long time. I think it is an awesome idea, and I can't wait to own one for myself.

The problem is, until they get this thing right, I am holding off. How freaking hard can it be to make a COLOR version that can do audio and video? It has been out long enough to mature that much.

I was SUPER excited to hear about the DX! That excitement was short lived as I soon found out it was nothing more than a super-size version of the original. Still no color or video. I don't get it.

I would LOVE to be able to get my magazine subscriptions, newspapers, and whatever books I am reading on a Kindle. However, if you can't get highres color version soft the magazines, then it is pointless in my opinion.

I still believe these book readers are amazing tools. I even use Stanza on the iPhone because I think it is such cool technology. I have been hoping to see the Kindle tunr into the killer device that lets me truly go paperless and let me ditch the stacks of RangeFinder and MacLife magazines!

I have been working on a project for some time now to create an iPhone App for musicians. I have been down many roads trying to find the best way to do this. The issue for me has always been that it is incredibly expensive.

So I started down the path of learning to develop them myself. The catch there is that I don't have the time it takes to brush up on those skills and really get very far.

So, after tons of research, I found a group of developers who can do this for me in a price range that makes sense. The first one we did is the Darren Kozelsky Band App.

Anyone seen the new Todd Snider record yet? I haven't seen it, but my friends at Lone Star Music just sent me a message to let me know that they used a shot of mine for the cover. That is cool on so many levels.

They had mentioned to me that they might, which pretty much made my day. But lots of things change rapidly in the music world, and in the "You got the cover" world, so I tried to temper my excitement. Well...looks like they DID use it, so I can celebrate and act like a fool about it now.

However, I will spare you the awkwardness of having to witness this celebration, and I will keep my dancing and screaming confined to my office.

Some rambling thoughts

I had a shoot yesterday with Seth James. Seth is one of my favorite guys in the whole business. Besides the fact that he is amazingly talented, he also happens to be a great guy. He is also an Aggie, and that carries substantial weight in my opinion. ;)

He is a really genuine guy, and one of the funniest SOB's I know.

Anyway, the shoot went well. I have some stuff out of it that I really like. Seth is playing in San Antonio tonight so he will not get to see the pictures for a few days I would imagine. I hope he digs them.

I also shot a wedding this weekend, and I am working like mad to get all those pictures taken care of. Almost every portion of the wedding shoot was done in below average lighting, so that makes my job significantly tougher.

Aside from being busy as hell, Apple released a new update for the iPhone today. I wasn't thinking, and clicked the update button before I realized it. So I wiped my jailbreak and had to start over. Not too terribly bad, but still a half a day of restores and such. In the end, it helped me re-visit the QIK application that lets me stream video from my iPhone. Very cool stuff. I will give it a test sometime this weekend and see how it goes. From what I have seen so far, it is pretty decent.

OK, I have decided that I need a better way to get all my gear from place to place. When we go anywhere and I want to bring my camera gear, it poses a problem for me. We usually go places in my truck, and that means my gear has to go in the back seat with the kiddos. Then all our bags must go in the bed...and if it rains, then we have to wrap everything in garbage bags. That is lame.

So I want to get a cargo trailer. So far, I haven't found one like I want that is also within a price range I feel is worth it.

I also have always wanted a sweet old school panel van. Like a 78 model. So after thinking about it a little more, I believe one solid option is that I combine me needs/wants. I will hunt for a killer panel van to act as the Major 7th/Texas Red Dirt Photos Mobile. I can drive it to shows or events that I am shooting and leave plenty of room for everyone, as well as any bags we might have.

I want to get a wrap on it too. It would be my actual work vehicle.

I think it would be cool.

I will settle for a cargo trailer if I have to, but I really want a nice late 70's model van. So keep your eyes open.

Unbelievably, someone has taken one of my prints from the gallery. It was of Micky and Willie Braun. At least that is the only one I KNOW is missing at the moment. Those things cost me a fortune to print and ship up here. Now I am not going to even put the rest of them up.

Screw it...I will take them to the General Store and sell them. Or screw that too, and I will just ship them home.

Depressing and disappointing.

Anyway, I am going to forget about it and get on with Musicfest. I got plenty of sleep last night and I feel much better today.

Darren plays up the mountain tonight, so I have that cold-ass journey ahead of me. You can't imagine how cold it gets in a tin can at -7 degrees. That gondola ride is about ten minutes of misery that late at night. But it is SO worth it. The mountaintop bar is killer.

Running back and forth all day wears my back out. Thank goodness Doc is here. Ski with Doc, then get adjusted. Perfect...

Today will be another crazy one starting around 4:30. I think we end the night with the Randy Rogers Band tonight so that should be pretty fun. One nice thing is that the last show of the night is at the Grand every night...well nice for those of us who stay at the Grand I suppose. 8)

It means I can run up and put the camera away and hit the afterparties without having to lug all that crap around.

Last night was a long one...REALLY long. Great time yesterday, but stayed up way longer than necessary. Got up and made breakfast early this morning. Working on about two hours of sleep.

I also loaded some of the shots on my Flickr account (they should be showing up to the right pretty soon). I haven't done anything with them really because I have so many, and no time to edit anything here in Steamboat. So they are pretty raw, but the point is just to get some shots of what is going on around here.

Going to track down some aspirin, and then track down a cold Shiner...

Went to several cool after parties last night after the Artist Welcome event. Still haven't gotten the gallery up, but I will do that soon. I will also be selling some gallery prints at the General Store.

Today I will be hitting The Rockfarmers, The Robisons Family, Johnny Cooper, Stoney LaRue, Roger Creager, Robert Earl Keen, Brandon Rhyder, Cory Morrow and Waylon Payne, Josh Grider, and Micky & The Motorcars...then to the parties!

And on a very cool note, the Robert Earl Keen Tribute was released to the artists this week, and I have the cover shot! Exciting.

John Dickson told me he is going to try and get one of the big promo posters for me. Really cool stuff, and an excellent start to the week!

Got up this morning and dropped Kylie off at school. 32 and freezing rain. Now we are at the airport hoping for no delays. The weather here in Dallas blows. Lots of Steamboaters here in the terminal. Should be a fun flight. Hoping to get to The Grand ASAP and get to work preparing the gallery.

As usual, we have overpacked, or at least I have. Oh well, screw it. No worries from here on out!

Ok folks, if anyone gives a rip, I will be trying to blog from Musicfest again. Cell coverage is spotty at best in Steamboat, but last year I was able to post some pics and do some updates. I will give it a shot again this year.

Much of what I post is in a dark venue or in the freezing cold so ignore spelling errors and cut me some slack. Chances are, my cold beverage intake might also alter my state.

Bear with me for the first day so I can figure out the best way to get the post to come up properly. The Musicfest pics will start showing up once I post the first one.

Ok, I have been complaining a little about my iPhone recently with its less than average battery life. Well, I applied the most recent upgrade for the iPhone, and was again let down. The battery life still blows chunks, and I honestly believe that Apple has used a little "trickery" to make me think my signal is stronger. It isn't. There is just a few more bars, but they don't mean anything it seems.

Aside from the dificulties, I do like the phone and the apps. It is capable of some really nice things when the battery is charged.

I have WAY too many apps on mine but I try everything out at least once. So the problem for me is that there are just too many pages of apps to sort through on my screen. So I tried arranging them by page. I put all my travel apps on one page, all my lookup utilities on one page...etc. That worked great until the first app update, which placed my app in a new place. That is frustrating.

So it seems obvious to me that others might have a similar problem. A few Google searches led me to folks doing just s I had done and trying to organize by page. Not a terrific solution. So I figure tht the App Store certainly has an app for organizing your iPhone. I am still amazed that they don't. So I waited and waited for this magic app to appear. No dice.

Well, in a fit of frustration yesterday, I finally decided to take matters into my own hands and do something I have tried to avoid for a month. I decided to jailbreak my phone. Why? Well, there is an app called Categories that does exactly hat I want, but it only works if you have a jailbroke phone. No telling what I have gotten myself into, but I did the jailbreak, and it was surprisingly easy to do. Installed Categories, and now my iPhone and I are friends again...at least until my battery runs out in 5 hours.

Categories is the only reason I did this, and if the App Store come out with something like it, I will find a way to un-jailbreak and use it instead. There are however some really nice apps out there that are only for jailbroken phones. I am tempted to mess with some of them but I do not want to stray too far from the pack. It does make me wonder what will ultimately happen with the iPhone though. There re some interesting and powerful apps that are being created that Apple will probably never approve for the App Store. We shall see...

The iPhone still seems like a toy to me due to the incredibly poor battery life. It has some pretty cool apps to play with, and that does keep it interesting. I am exploring an app call Jott today. Seems like it could be useful. The one thing I do have trouble with is organizing the app icons. I cannot believe there isn't a tool in the app store to do this.

I am holding out for one. If something doesn't turn up soon, I will jailbreak the phone and use Categories. Basically it is exactly what I want, but only works if re iPhone is jailbroken.

Surely there will be a way to do this soon. It is very limiting.

Also, I'd you happen to restore you iPhone, there is a good chance that you all updates will quit. That sucks because you have to do a complete reinstall of everything, this loaing data you may have been entering for weeks it longer.

On an unrelated note, Wii is kick ass

So I went and got myself an iPhone. I wasn't going to wait in line all day for one, so I waited until I could stroll in and complete the whole process in about 10 minutes.

I REALLY want to like the iPhone. I really do. There are some really cool things that you can do with it. However, at the end of the day, it is nothing more than a toy when compared to a Blackberry. Unfortunately, my needs just do not allow me to use the iPhone as my primary device. I am on the phone or email (or both) all day long. The problem with this is that the iPhone battery is a piece of shit. Seriously, it can't hold a charge for a day. Apple's answer to this is to turn of 3G, locator services, Bluetooth...etc. Ok, so if I turn every useful feature off, essentially rendering the device a paperweight, then the battery will last from sun up to sundown...maybe.

The Blackberry CRUSHES the iPhone in the battery area. And no matter what anyone says to me, you will NEVER convince me that it is as easy to type on. It just isn't. People who say that have never used a Blackberry. The tactile buttons on the Blackberry allow me to use it with one hand, and this is something I do often. There is no comparison in the device input area.

I will not get into the whole "cut and paste thing." I think everyone knows that iPhone MUST have cut and paste soon. Really, it is a MUST.

The other big problem for me is a lack of a "Search" in email, contacts, or anywhere useful for that matter. You cannot use this device for business if you can't search email and contacts. I applaud Apple for the Active Directory Sync, but they still come up WAY short in the mobile business user arena.

Hopefully, these are just software matters and can be addressed soon. Until then, it is nothing more than a toy. A really cool one, but still a toy. It doesn't free me from my Blackberry in any way, which is what I was rooting for.

So, if you need me, I'll be playing Cowbell or downloading free apps...at least until the battery goes dead.

We are sitting on the plane in London, ready to take off. As beautiful as Venice, Milan, Nice, Cannes, the French countryside, the Alps, the Italian countryside, Reggio, Soveneiro, Parma, Le Puy, Craponne Sur Arzon, along with the countless other places we drove through this week are, I have to say Combine is about the most beautiful place in the world to me. Ok...that isn't true. As the Euro-Mullet parking attendant in San Marco Parking Garage screamed to Marshall, "don't you f'ng bullshit me man!" (Pronounced "bull-sheet!")

First of all, Max and Christian booked an entire hotel for us. It is literally the top of the mountain. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. A little ways down the mountain is a village called Soveneiro. The have 52 people living in this village, and at the festival last night, there were 75 volunteers. The festival has become very large for such a small village.

Max's band played first and it was great. They rock. Then Bonnie and Matt, and then Darren and the band.
All of them did a great job. But the best part of the show was an impromptu jam session with everyone on stage. I think they did about 10 more songs!

Then, the staff and all of us got together and they made us pasta (amazing). So at 4am, we ate, drank wine, grappe, and beer. Very cool. I have a strong suspicion that everyone may sleep late. Only Kim and I are at breakfast. Pretty much the same as always. Well...not really...usually I am the only one to make breakfast. Ha

Modena with Max and Fabio

Kim and I just arrived in Modena, dropped the PA, and went to Max's home. Ever where you look is Texas Music hats, cds, photos. Very cool. They display photos from their visit to Texas proudly. We had cold Bud, and a fabulous meal prepared by Max's girlfriend. Awesome. All fresh local cheese, and several things we have never had. It was really neat. Not to mention that the view from their balcony is amazing. It overlooks vineyards on one side and olives on the other. It is ridiculous how beautiful everything is! Played guitar for a bit, and now Fabio is taking us to meet the rest of the gang to go to the festival. Bonnie Bishop and Matt Skinner are playing with us tonight. Good times. Amazing folks too. I love these guys. Lots of laughs and great conversation. Listening to Bleu, EYB, Steve Earl, and Bingham in the car. They are ate up with it. I have seen them 4 times in two weeks, and each time we see them they are wearing another band shirt, and there are like 8 in their group. Makes us feel at home. They showed me my name in liner notes from some of the guys. They are fanatical. Love it!

We talked about Wade, Stoney, Darren, and just about everyone else at lunch. I also saw 4 different people from 4 different countries wearing Wade Bowen shirts. Gotta love that.

After a great show last night for a bunch of awesome folks, we got to the room at 4:30. Packed for an hour, slept for two...Kim and are the early risers, so we are heading to Modena with the van to meet up with Max and Christian. Tonight will be a long one for sure. Our Italian friends don't hold back much with anything they do. Good times for sure.

Today we are at Vicenza. These guys are fired up. Just got back from the sand and they are ready to rock. They had a rough few weeks, and hopefully they will have something to cheer about tonight. We expect a big house tonight. Everyone here is so glad to have us and they are so appreciative. It is incredible and makes you think quite a bit about what they really do.

Looking forward to this one as much as any this week.
